DAILY GRAMMAR (DG) 02-05-2018

1a. He is born in Iwo, Nigeria. (No)

He was born in Iwo, Nigeria. (Yes)

1b. She had been born in a small village. (No)

She was born in a small village. (Yes)

(That someone “was born” is idiomatic. This is the form used in correct English, not “is born”, “has born”.)

2a. The students will visit the zoo when they will be ready. (No)

The students will visit the zoo when they are ready. (Yes)

2b. He will attend your programme if he will be free. (No)

He will attend your programme if he is free. (Yes)

(“When,” “as soon as”, “if”, “before”, “after”, “till” and “until” are temporal adverbials. Future tense is not used after them.)

3a. She sings as if she is a bird. (No)

She sings as if she were a bird. (Yes)

3b. He talks to the boy as though he is his father. (No)

He talks to the boy as though he were his father. (Yes)

(The past subjunctive is used after the phrases, “as if” and “as though” because it is not possible, with reference to the above examples for instance, for a person to be a bird or for someone who is not a person’s father to be his father, usually.)
