(When two singular nouns are practically synonymous, they are taken as singular and the verb should also be singular.)

2a. No students is expected to cheat in the examinations. (No)

No student is expected to cheat in the examinations. (Yes)

2b. No examinations is allowed during the break. (No)

No examinations are allowed during the break. (Yes)

2c. None of the teachers has been paid his salary. (Yes)

None of the teachers have been paid their salary. (Yes)

2d. None of the information he peddles are authentic. (No)

None of the information he peddles is authentic. (Yes)

(The nouns that follow “no” and “none” determine the verb, usually. That “none” cannot take a plural verb has been described as a myth because it also means “not any” that has a plural sense, not just “not one”.)

3a. Nigeria has played her best and won the World Cup, according to my dream. (No)

Nigeria have played their best and won the World Cup, according to my dream. (Yes)

3b. The enemy was surrounded in the decisive battle. (No)

The enemy were surrounded in the decisive battle. (Yes)

(In sports, while referring to players, the name of the country agrees with a plural verb. When “enemy” is used to mean the armed forces of a nation with which one’s country is at war, a plural verb is used.)
