Young Muslims shape their identities and their everyday lifestyle while negotiating different aspects of youth culture such as fashion, music and New/Social Media. Much has been written and said about Muslim youth and/or terrorism, extremism and other ways of radicalisation. This international workshop however, seeks to direct the focus to young Muslims and popular culture. The two-day workshop seeks to look into the subject of music as a key tool for expressions of criticism, creating new cultures, shaping identities while following key questions such as: In what way is Music key to make diversity visible (audible)? How does Music shape young Muslim identity? We are open to samples from a variety of field of research such as:

  • Representation in Digital Culture
  • Representation in Media/New/Social Media
  • Aesthetic aspects of identity formation and music
  • Regional phenomena
  • Music styles and genres

We invite paper presentations (15-20 min), workshops (90 min) or posters from different fields and disciplines such as Cultural Studies, Cultural and Social Anthropology, History, Theology, Religious Studies, Media Studies, Musicology, Music Ethnology and others. We are open to a variety of methods, theoretical approaches and topics as we wish to bring together researchers and build an international and transdisciplinary network for future research. This workshop aims to give a starting platform. The workshop proceedings will be published as an edited volume or special issue.
