DAILY GRAMMAR (DG) 06-06-2018

1a. The young man is a talkative. (No)

The young man is a talkative person. (Yes)

(“Talkative”, which describes a person that is fond of, or given to talking, is an adjective, not a noun.)

2a. He is an undergraduate student of the University of Ilorin. (Yes)

He is an undergraduate of the University of Ilorin. (Yes)

2b. The boy will graduates from the university next year. (No)

The boy will graduate from the university next year. (Yes)

2c. Graduates students are more responsible than their undergraduate counterparts. (No)

Graduate students are more responsible than their undergraduate counterparts. (Yes)

(Both “graduate” and “undergraduate” are nouns and adjectives. Besides, “graduate” is a verb but “undergraduate” is not. When an auxiliary verb precedes a (main) verb, the verb is not inflected. Then, adjectives are not pluralised.)

3a. Tell the secretary to bring a letterheaded paper. (No)

Tell the secretary to bring a letterhead. (Yes)

3b. The problem of many Nigerian politicians is greediness.

The problem of many Nigerian politicians is greed.

(The fact that we say “fried fish”, “grilled meat”, “sliced bread”, etc. does not mean that there is “letterheaded paper”. A “letterhead” is a printed heading on stationery, which states a person or organisation’s name and address. “Greed” is a noun; “greediness” is not standard.)
