Language and Democracy Conference 2017, Finland

We are pleased to announce an international conference on Language and Democracy organized by the Modern Language Society, to be held at the University of Tampere on 24-26 August 2017.

To celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Society and the 100th anniversary of the Finnish Declaration of Independence, we seek to enhance our understanding of the notion of “democracy” in language use, and particularly invite papers that systematically study democratic language practices in a socio-cultural context, or model the interplay of language and democracy from a more theoretical perspective.

The key themes of the conference are language and equality, language ideologies, language policies, multilingualism, discourses of democracy, and media discourse and democracy.

Date:

24-Aug-2017 – 26-Aug-2017

Venue:

University of Tampere

The conference will be held in the building Pinni B (number 3 in the campus map) at the main campus of the University of Tampere.
